Did you know that the term "the whole nine yards" is a sailing term? I just learned this from Mark Denny's Float Your Boat!: The Evolution and Science of Sailing:
The whole nine yards: Everything. Mainsails on square-riggers were supported by yards (horizontal spars). if all three mainsails on a three-master were unfurled, then every mainsail was deployed.
